Learn to Surf – News update!

Surfer chicks / bros how good was this weekend!! Great weather and waves! Yewww best combination! Although the waves were huge and most beaches were closed, the waves down at Seven Mile Beach were awesome for surf lessons because our beach is by far one of the best learn to surf beaches in Australia and people came away with some awesome wetsuit tans! Hope you all wore your sunscreen, I didn’t and got sizzled!
In our Learn to surf news this week.. Check out our Aldi ‘surfin santas’, they bring the spirit of Christmas to a place where you would never normally get the Christmas cheer! In other news, the Pipeline masters is now LIVE! Go and watch it here!
For anyone who wants to practice what they have learnt at camp, I highly recommend Cronulla beach as it is a short distance away from the city and it can be quiet when everywhere else is crowded. The Rip Curl store there has soft board hire for $20 a day and demo board hire for $40 a day! If anyone wants to have a look at the boards in the city, come and see us in the Rip Curl store on Market St.

Party time!

Surfing on the Internet – The Headlines:

1. THE LAST Red Bull Decades Episode – Surfboards of the FUTURE!

This series, based on some of the world’s best surfers riding some of the most iconic boards in surfing history, has so far seen Kolohe Andino, Julian Wilson, Ian Walsh and Jamie O’Brien riding a Greg Noll Elephant Gun, a Gerry Lopez Pipeline Gun, a Glenn Pang x Martin Potter Town and Country Twin Fin, the Channel Islands x Kelly Slater 6’1″, shaped by Al Merrick, and a Mayhem Hydro-Flex Rocket. While the series is based around iconic and historic boards, there’s also a futuristic element, as we see in this episode, which features three boards shaped by Meyerhoffer, Thompson and Cole. The designs are funky, but as Al Merrick says, we’re just not used to things that look like that.

2. Aldi – Surfin’ Santas

Those that have been here in Australia for more than a year might note that this is the second year running that the German supermarket chain ALDI have ran this advertisement. However, considering it is the best piece of advertising I have ever seen in my life (except for the genious John Claude Van Damm Volvo ad). It deserves to be shown EVERY YEAR! Check it out and see what I am talking about! If it doesn’t get you in the mood for Christmas, maybe it will get you in the mood for surfing YEWWW!

3. Alana Blanchard / Kelly Slater win Surfer Mag popularity poll

North Shore, Oahu – The 44th Annual Surfer Poll Awards at the Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of O’ahu gathered the best surfers, filmmakers, and surf legends under one roof to honor the best films and performances of the year, as well as the Top 10 Men and Top 5 Women of the year, as voted by the readers of Surfer Magazine.
Each year the SURFER staff pores through all of the full-length films and web shorts produced that year, narrowing down hundreds of great rides and notable cinematographic moments to just a handful of nominees. And while it’s always a challenge, this year there was one surfer/co-director who dominated the movie categories: John John Florence. Read More

4. French Surfer takes to the Alaskan wilds

At first, Alaska doesn’t sound much like a surf destination but this is just a matter of perception. O’Neill team rider and adventurer, Damien Castera of France, sees it all the way around. For him the Last Frontier means not only empty line-ups and perfect waves. Alaska is also about a getting back into the wild experience.
Damien spent two months there, surfing and hiking and being self-sufficient: fishing for food, rough encampments for accommodation and pepper sprays as self-defense against bears or any other wild life
Check out Damien’s 60 days in Alaska… Read more

5. One and Only – Felipe Toledo

Brazil’s Filipe Toledo is one of the hottest young talents on the World Tour right now. The surf world was pretty excited last week when this video came out as this kid can BOOST airs! A couple of the airs in here are really crazy. Mr Toledo has come on real strong in his rookie year, stomping some of the most memorable airs and combos (Rio!). A welcome commodity to the webcast, f’sureeeeee.
